ICC Awards for 2007 Presented

The ICC Awards and Certificates of Merit for excellence in different categories for the year 2007 were presented to the winners at a glittering function organised in Mumbai on 26 September 2008. Shri S. C. Jamir, His Excellency the Governor of Maharashtra was the Chief Guest and gave away the Awards and Certificates of Merit to the winners.

Mr. Dipankar Dutta Guta, President welcomed the august gathering consisting of Industrialists and Captains of the industry, senior officials from the government, academia, research institutions etc. In his welcome address, Mr. Dutta Gupta, touched upon the current status of the chemical industry, the various concerns and issues affecting the growth of the Indian chemical industry.

In his welcome address Mr. D. Dutta Gupta, urged the industry to be aware of the growing number of international regulations that impact it.

In his address as Chief Guest, Mr. S. C. Jamir, His Excellency the Governor hoped that Maharashtra would retain the No. 1 position once it had in respect of the chemical industry.

The Government of Maharashtra has set up a Task Force to create a blueprint for the development of the chemical industry in the State, said the Governor.

Mr. Jamir highlighted the important role played by the chemical industry to the Indian economy and its relevance to the State of Maharashtra. "There was a period when the chemical industry dominated manufacturing in the State," he pointed out.

Referring to the efforts at industrial development in Maharashtra, Mr. Jamir pointed to the efforts of the
Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which has built 225 industrial complexes in the state. "MIDC is also responsible for developing the gas grid in the industrial areas of the state," he added.

According to the Governor, Maharashtra continues to be an important destination for international companies looking to set up their industrial base in India. As a pointer towards this he noted that the state has more than 130 Special Economic Zones in the planning stages and Boeing is planning to set up a manufacturing facility in Nagpur. Related to the chemical industry, he pointed to the plans of Dow Chemicals and DuPont to build their R&D centres in the State.
