ICC AWARDS 2010 PRESENTED

The Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, the majestic architectural edifice overlooking the Gateway of India and the Arabian Sea was the glittering venue of the 46th Annual Awards Presentation Ceremony of Indian Chemical Council in the evening on 30th September 2010. The event was specially remembered by one and all as the august audience, more than 150, comprising captains of the Industry, entrepreneurs, CEOs, senior executives and leading scientists who cheered and applauded each and every Award winner when they received the Award from the Chief Guest, Padmavibhushan Professor M. M. Sharma.

Although Mr. Murli Deora, Hon'ble Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India was expected to attend the function, due to urgent Cabinet meeting at Delhi he could not attend the programme

Mr. Jai Hiremath, President of ICC welcomed the guests and highlighted the achievements of the Chemical Industry in improving the quality of life and said that the industry has given the maximum number of innovation to the world and is poised to be a key enabler of well being and asked the question, does it deserves to be perceived so negatively then?

He also referred to a site developed by TATA CHEMICALS (humantouchofchemistry.com) which is an attempt to create affinity in kids who are the next generation stake holders towards Chemistry.

Mr. Hiremath thanked the Government of India for its initiating in setting up task force under the Chairmanship of Mr. Arun Maira, Member of the Planning Commission. He hoped that the recommendations of this committee will result in National Chemical Policy with a vision for 2020 set goals.

He highlighted the various initiatives taken by the ICC regarding Carbon Footprint, Baseline Energy Audit under the PAT Scheme, Process Safety Centre, R&D Initiative through cooperation with TIFAC, Safe Transportation of Chemicals, etc.

Mr. Hiremath appealed to the members to participate in INDIA CHEM 2010 which is taking place in Mumbai on 28, 29 & 30 October 2010 and said that Honorable President of India will be inaugurating this event and members must participate in this event in large numbers.

Mr. Hiremath also referred to the conclave which ICC is organizing with the representative of Overseas Industry Associations including that of ICCA. During this conclave, important topics such as upgradation of Skills in the Chemical Industry, Impact of International Treaties, etc will be discussed.

He also referred to the notification issued by Ministry of Environment withholding the expansion of Chemical companies in the notified chemicals zones. Mr. Hiremath appealed to the Ministry of Environment to please consider the decision on case to case basis which will send the positive signals for overseas companies.

Prof. M. M. Sharma, in his address complimented the ICC for presenting Awards in various categories and referred to his long Association as a member of the Awards Selection Committee of ICC.

Professor Sharma in his speacjHe specifically referred to the Acharya P. C. Ray Award for Development of Indigenous Technology and said that this is a very prestigious Award of ICC and many illustrious companies of today have won this Award in the past.

He said that while six to seven Indian Pharma companies have made name in the Global market, none of the Chemical manufacturing companies from other sectors have achieved similar recognition in the international market. He said that, in his view this is because of apathy of the industry towards Research and Development activity. He also said that it is only through R&D that company will succeed and urged every chemical company to appoint Research and Development incharge to be answerable to Board of Directors directly.

Industry must provide adequate funds for R&D and the failure should be seen as a step towards success.
