ICC Annual Awards Presentation Function for the year 2010 was held in Mumbai on 21 October2011. Mr. K. Jose Cyriac, Secretary, DCPC, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India was the Chief Guest and Mr. Peter Beckingham, British Dy. High commissioner, Mumbai was the Guest of Honour. More than 150 delegates attended the function which included Entrepreneurs, CEO's, Senior Executives, leading scientists, executives of chemical companies and many others.
ICC, every year (since 1964) invites nominations for the Awards which are scrutinized by Awards Selection Committee, consisting of representatives of academia and industry. CEOs of the companies are also invited for discussions with members of the Awards Selection Committee and wherever necessary site visits are also carried out. These Awards are well recognized in Indian chemical industry.
Mr. R. Parthasarathy, President, ICC welcomed the gathering and introduced Chief Guest and Guest of Honour.
Mr. Parthasarathy in his welcome address said that chemical industry in India is now on recovery path after recession which affected the global chemical industry during the last 2-3 years. He said that knowledge chemicals, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, paints etc. have shown very good results registering growth of more than 10%. He further said that in his views, there is failure on the part of all the stakeholders in pushing rural economy and immediate need is to take steps for improving living standards and purchasing power of rural folk.
He said that ICC is always receiving full support from the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers in its various activities such as awareness for Chemical Weapons Convention, Montreal Protocol and various other international treaties, etc.
Mr. K. Jose Cyriac, Secretary, DCPC, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India complimented award winners and especially stalwarts who have served the industry for more than 50 years. He also complimented ICC for bringing out excellent supplement which covers most of the important areas such as Innovation, Energy Conservation, Safety, Health & Environment, Water Management, Social Responsibility etc. for which awards are presented. He raised the issue of innovation and pointed out that performance of the Indian industry on the innovation front when compared with other leading global countries such as USA, China, Japan and Korea, is much to be desired. In fact number of patents filed every year by USA and China are far more than what India files.
He also referred to the award for corporate social responsibility and complimented the winners for their proactive role in serving the society. He said that although chemical industry contributes immensely for manufacturing of products which are used by common man, the industry is not receiving the proper appreciation which it so richly deserves. In this context, he highlighted joint efforts made by the Ministry and ICC in preparing short film which will be telecasted on various national channels. This film will highlight contribution of chemicals in various products which are used by mankind in day to day life.
He gave assurance to the industry that Ministry will continue to help the industry for improving its competitiveness.
Mr. Peter Beckingham, British Dy. High commissioner, Mumbai in his speech highlighted close linkages between chemical industry in UK and India. He referred to the investments made by TATA Chemicals, Reliance And United Phosphorus Ltd and others. The experience of these companies has been very satisfactory. He invited Indian companies to invest in UK for mutual benefits.
Mr. Y. M. Kothari, Vice President, ICC in his speech responded to the comments made by Secretary - Chemicals regarding innovation. He said that each company undertakes R&D in their plant and requested the Government to create a model for funding R&D projects. He assured the Ministry that ICC will be happy to provide necessary inputs to the Government.
ICC's new Members Directory was released at the hands of Mr. K. Jose Cyriac, Secretary, DCPC. Members Directory contains information about member-companies including products manufacturers, contact details etc.
Mr. H. S. Karangle, Director General, ICC proposed Vote of Thanks. An integrated approach of water management is practiced by the Company by separating water from industrial effluent using a multiple effect evaporator. The quality of water meets the requirements of scrubber feed, replacing the use of de-mineralized water. Condensate from all samples points and smaller coolers are collected and polished to the quality of boiler feed. The quality of this polished condensate replaces the use of demineralised water. The quality of specific streams of industrial effluent is monitored; the reuse of the same water for cooling and water sealing replaces fresh raw water. Processing of treated industrial effluent through reverse osmosis and feeding the permeate as cooling and water makeup replaces use of soft water.
Specific consumption of Process water per unit of product output has come down from 8.56 KL during the year 2008-2009 to 7.31 KL during the year 2009-2010.
