The Annual Awards for Excellence for the year 2014, instituted by Indian Chemical Council (ICC), the apex national body representing all sectors of chemical industry in India, were presented to the winners at a mega event organised on 30th September 2015 at Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai.
The glittering event was attended by a galaxy of guests including captains of industry, academia, research institutions, senior officers from government departments apart from other invited dignitaries.
The event commenced with the traditional Welcome address by Mr. Rakesh Bhartia, President of ICC.
Mr. Richard Ridinger, CEO, Lonza Group was the Chief Guest and Mr. Sanjeev Gandhi, Member of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF SE, was the Guest of Honour, Mr. Vijay Sankar, Additional Vice President-ICC introduced the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour to the august audience.
MR. RAKESH BHARTIA, PRESIDENT-ICC PRESENTING A MEMENTO THE THE CHIEF GUEST.
MR. RAVI KAPOOR, VICE PRESIDENT-ICC, PRESENTING A FLOWER BOUQUET TO MR. SANJEEV GANDHI/p>
Mr. Rakesh Bhartia, President-ICC in his welcome speech congratulated all Award Winners and said, "This year the jury had a challenging task of choosing the award winners as we find that more and more companies are raising bars in terms of standards in every sphere of activities. Making a reference to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Mr. Bhartia said, "We are very proud that ISRO successfully launched Mangal Yan this year. It was India's first Inter Planetary Mission. With this achievement India has become the Fourth Space Agency to reach Mars. India is also the first Asian country to do so and First Nation in the world to do so in its first attempt. Now with discovery of water on Mars it would assume India's prominence in accessing this new front.
The reason I made reference to ISRO and Mangal Yan is because ICC stands privileged to have received nomination from Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) for consideration of their achievements for ICC PC Ray Award for The Development of Indigenous Technology. VSCC has embarked upon sustained efforts to indigenise all the vital chemicals and materials needed for their space program in both their in-house facilities as well as in collaboration with National Laboratories. Not only they are innovating and creating technology, taking India right at the forefront of space technology, but also important that they are indigenising and encouraging manufacturing in India. It is moment of great pride and important milestone in the history of ICC that VSSC has chosen to submit nomination in this particular category of award."
MR. VIJAY SANKAR, ADDL VICE PRESISENT-ICC INTRODUCING THE CHIEF GUEST AND GUEST OF HONOUR

C I T A T I O N
Chemplast Sanmar is the flagship company of The Sanmar Group and is a major manufacturer of PVC Resins, Caustic Soda, Chlorinated Solvents, Refrigerant Gas and Industrial Salt. The company's manufacturing facilities are located at Mettur, Panruti, Cuddalore and Vedaranyam in Tamil Nadu and at Karaikal in the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The company is a Responsible Care Committed Company.
The company established a plant to manufacture Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) at Mettur way back in 1967 with a capacity of 6000 TPA and increased its capacity to 66000 TPA at present. The commissioning of a PVC project at Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, has been a major step forward for the Group. The facility commissioned in September 2009 has an annual capacity of 3,00,000 tons, the largest chemical project to come up in the state of Tamil Nadu for well over a decade. Chemplast Sanmar's aggregate capacity of 3,66,000 tons makes it one of the largest PVC players in India. Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) is polymerised in reactors to produce PVC. The company imports the VCM through a Captive Marine Terminal Facility (MTF) north of Chitterapettai Village in Cuddalore District. VCM is transported from the MTF to the plant through a subsea and underground 12" pipeline of 1 KM of subsea marine offshore section and 2.5 KM of underground onshore section. At Chemplast, integration - forward and backward - is the key. The basic feedstock for its PVC plant at Mettur, alcohol and chlorine, comes from its industrial alcohol plant at Panruti and chloralkali facilities at Mettur and Karaikal.
The Chlorochemicals division of Chemplast, a result of backward integration by the Group, manufactures a wide range of products using a highly integrated manufacturing process. These downstream products are either chlorine derivatives or chlorine users in the production process. The salt needed for chlorine manufacture is supplied by Chemplast's salt fields at Vedaranyam. The power intensive electrolysis process of manufacturing chlorine is served by Chemplast's own power plant. This makes Chemplast one of the most integrated chemical plants in the country with a closed manufacturing loop. It has played a pioneering role in the field through its ingenious choice of feedstock, manufacturing processes and efficient, eco-friendly practices. Its constant development of environmentfriendly production processes has reduced the consumption of valuable natural resources.
The Vision and Policy of the Sanmar Group is "Not to extract ground water for operation of the plant". For units closer to the sea shore, a captive Desalination plant meets the entire water requirement. The quantum of waste water generation is controlled at the generation point itself and the waste water generated is treated in Zero Liquid Discharge plant. The treated water is recycled back to the process. The company is carrying out environmental surveillance study involving air, water and soil of surrounding areas (around 5 km radius). The company has online monitors involving various pollution control parameters in air which are linked to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Care Air Center. Periodic safety related training is given to all regular and contract employees.
In recognition of the above, INDIAN CHEMICAL COUNCIL is pleased to confer the ICC CERTIFICATE OF MERIT FOR EXCELLENCE IN MANAGEMENT OF HEALTH / SAFETY / ENVIRONMENT for the year 2014 on CHEMPLAST SANMAR LTD., Tamilnadu.
